CUTTER HEAD MOUNT OPTIONS

Standard Configuration...

Shinn Systems mounts it's cutter heads so that the rotation of the cutter drum is parallel to the pin of the stick of the excavator.

This has several distinct advantages...

  1. With the cutter head mounted in this position, the entire force of the excavator can be applied to the tree before it is cut. This enables the operator to position the tree onto the right of way, or away from the machine or other objects.
  2. During grinding the forces applied to the cutter head can be extreme.  Pushing or pulling objects is a common practice.  The force of these actions, coupled with the dynamic effects of the teeth engaging the wood can place force on the stick perpendicular to the rotation of the drum.  Since excavator booms and sticks are engineered to handle these forces along their length, it makes good sense to transfer as much of the energy of grinding in the direction that the arm of the excavator is strongest.  Cutter heads mounted in line with the arm of the excavator may be good for sweeping, but can place copious amounts of load on the arm, bushings  and pins of an excavator in the direction that they are weakest.
  3. By using the roll function of the excavator stick, debris can be trapped and ground instead of chasing pieces from one location to another.

Removable Configuration

(450 HP Land Mine Tiller Attachment-27" cutting depth)

For those who want flexibility in attachments (i.e. quick change from cutter head to stump grinder to bucket), we offer ball valve connections on the last bulkhead at the cutter head.  Ball valves are used in lieu of quick connects because of the danger of disconnect during grinding.  The cutter head is constantly working in brush and limbs and the opportunity for quick connects to be hit is very high.  If the main loop hoses or the motor case return is disconnected during operation, damage to the motor hydraulic seal can occur very quickly.  By using ball valves, contamination of the loop is minimized during attachment changes.

90 Degree Mount System

90 Degree Mount Showing Cut Angle Cylinder

Engineered for high production light clearing/mowing, the 90 degree mount is perfect for 4-6" material.  The unique design not only allows sweeping of material, but also permits the operator to control debris discharge.
